On 22 June 1941, the war against the Soviet Union („Operation Barbarossa“) began. During the war several million soldiers of the Red Army were taken prisoner by the Germans. In 1941, there were 80 major POW camps (Stalags) in the German Reich. As a result of the appalling living conditions in the camps and work commandos, in particular, 3 to 3.5 million Soviet POWs died (extinction by labour).

The permanent exhibition in the former detention building provides impressive information on the history of the POW camp Stalag 326 (VI K) Senne. In particular, the colour photographs taken by the former camp physician Dr Hugo Lill illustrate not only the painful history of the POWs but also document the construction of the camp. In addition, the exhibition shows several rare objects of handicraft made by POWs. The US documentary on the camp’s liberation concludes the tour.

Services and Information

In 2019, the association Förderverein Gedenkstätte Stalag 326 (VI K) Senne e.V. celebrated its 25th anniversary. Since 1996, the memorial site has existed on the former grounds of the POW camp Stalag 326.

With the help of numerous volunteers and employees, we have been able to discover the history of the Stalag step by step in order to make it available to the public. Another major task of the association is to investigate the fates of POWs and to support their relatives when they come to visit the cemetery.

In addition, we have successfully extended our educational programmes.
Until today, more than 50,000 people have visited the memorial site and have attended our tours. It should be mentioned that an increasing number of schools take part in our educational programmes. This helps young people to expand their knowledge of the history of Stalag 326.
