The first war victims from Stalag 326 were buried in the cemetery of the Catholic parish of St Achatius. Soon after the camp cemetery (the present Cemetery of Honour of Soviet War Victims) was opened on an adjoining site.<\/p>\n

Between 1941 and the camp\u2019s liberation on 2 April 1945, a mass grave consisting of 36 rows was laid out, each row being 110 metres long.<\/p>\n

After the liberation, a small group of survivors built an obelisk in the cemetery. In addition, they put up memorial stones, each stone marking one row of the mass grave.<\/p>\n

The fence around the cemetery was also built by the liberated POWs. The former rails of the light railway, leading from H\u00f6velhof train station to the camp, were used to support the original wood panelling.<\/p>\n

In the early 1960s, the cemetery was redesigned to give it the park-like appearance it still has today. The obelisk, the 36 memorial stones and the fence are cleaned at regular intervals.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>[\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/3″]

The publication “Der Ehrenfriedhof sowjetischer Kriegstoter in Stukenbrock-Senne” (the Cemetery of Honour of Soviet War Victims in Stukenbrock-Senne) by Oliver Nickel includes further information. Sold out at the moment, unfortunately. Next year a revised new edition is to be published.<\/p>\n
