On 22 June 1941, the war against the Soviet Union (\u201eOperation Barbarossa\u201c) began. During the war several million soldiers of the Red Army were taken prisoner by the Germans. In 1941, there were 80 major POW camps (Stalags) in the German Reich. As a result of the appalling living conditions in the camps and work commandos, in particular, 3 to 3.5 million Soviet POWs died (extinction by labour).<\/p>\n

The permanent exhibition in the former detention building provides impressive information on the history of the POW camp Stalag 326 (VI K) Senne. In particular, the colour photographs taken by the former camp physician Dr Hugo Lill illustrate not only the painful history of the POWs but also document the construction of the camp. In addition, the exhibition shows several rare objects of handicraft made by POWs. The US documentary on the camp\u2019s liberation concludes the tour.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

The German-language brochure “Filling Memory Gaps” recounts the little-known events of the years 1941-1944 in occupied Vinnitsa and is the result of German-Ukrainian cooperation. The history of the camp for Soviet prisoners of war, the guard system and the establishment of a so-called camp for interned German prisoners of war on the same site from 1944-1948 are described in detail.<\/p>\n

The second part of the brochure describes the gradual extermination of patients in the Vinnitsa psychiatric hospital. It also briefly discusses similar actions in other clinics in occupied Ukraine and the trial of the medical staff of the clinic in Vinnitsa who were involved in the murder.
